Get Ready for Backpacking

The high adventure committee's backpacking team is offering two courses to help prepare for backpacking adventures including treks conducted at Philmont Scout Ranch. Beginning this year, Backpacking 101 will focus on training first-time backpackers, while Hike and Learn Mini-Philmont will focus on training units that have already been backpacking a few times and need to enhance their skills. 

Backpacking 101

Backpacking 101 is a one-day training course designed for first-time backpackers. This course provides an introduction to backpacking skills and techniques. Participants will be given an opportunity to work with equipment brought by the training staff and will learn everything you need to know about backpacking! The course is held at the Cockrell Scout Center.

Hike and Learn Mini-Philmont

Hike and Learn Mini-Philmont is a weekend training for units that have already been backpacking a few times and need to enhance their skills. The activity requiring crews to break camp on Saturday morning and hike to different training locations while carrying their packs. Crews must be fully self-sufficient, including the ability to cook their own meals on the trail. Units should bring a GPS. Units should plan on cooking their own meals using backpack stoves or propane stoves.
